| We might need to rethink this whole playoff thing again |

Guess again. Vijay Singh has turned the 2008 playoffs into another yawner. (Not to blame him, of course; if you could knock down 60-foot putts, you wouldn't be worrying about keeping the field close, either.) But with his win Monday at the Deutsche Bank Championship, Vijay is extremely close to winning the entire FedEx Cup without even having to show up in Atlanta for the Championship. Folks, that ain't right. I know it's a sin to compare sports across one another, but there's merit to it in this case. The NFL didn't just hand the Patriots the Super Bowl last year after they went 18-0 prior to the Super Bowl. Much as ESPN would love it, the Yankees and Red Sox don't get a free pass into the American League Championship Series. And golf shouldn't be structured so that one guy can dance away with the championship three weeks early, no matter how unlikely that may seem at the outset. Why not go to match play? Why not tighten the point structure still further so that the winner of the tournament has to at least get on a plane in order to take the FedEx trophy? Why not just go straight to nine-iron jousting? Anything's better than having the tournament over before it starts. This isn't the PGA's fault; Vijay's just playing out of his mind now. But the PGA needs to realign the points system, pronto. Posted originally: 09/02/2008 |

Poor, poor golf. The powers that be tried so hard to create post-major interest in the sport by manufacturing this brand-new playoff system, and then Tiger ran away with it in the inaugural year. So this year, with Tiger out of the mix, we were heading for more drama, right?
