No. 1 Star: Sami Vatanen, D, Finland Falling behind 3-0 to the Czechs in their tournament debut, the Suomi needed a hero. This smooth skating Anaheim Ducks prospect delivered, scoring twice in the third period, including the tying goal with just over five minutes to play. The Finns completed the comeback three minutes later to skate off with a 4-3 win. No. 2 Star: Anton Rodin, F, Sweden When Sweden blew their 3-0 lead to the 10th ranked Austrians, Rodin brought his team back by receiving a breakaway pass and going blocker side on goaltender Marco Weiser. It was his second goal of the night, and stood up as the game winner as Austria never came close again. He also had an assist on the seventh Swedish goal, moving one point behind Canada's Gabriel Bourque for the tournament lead. No. 3 Star: Richard Panik(notes), F, Slovakia He would have been higher if he had kept his early pace up. He scored twice in the opening 3:44 of play, and had two goals and two assists when Slovakia took a 7-0 lead on Latvia thirteen minutes into the third. However, his coach played his line less as the game went on, and Latvia was able to rally to make it an 8-3 final. Tomas Viedensky also finished with four points (one goal, three assists), and Tomas Tatar(notes) had two goals and an assist. Honourable Mentions: Team USA's 3-0 victory over Switzerland was the result of strong team play, but G Jack Campbell made good in his U20 debut, saving 14 first-period shots before his teammates took over in the second and third. ... D Olivier Ekman-Larsson (SWE) matched Rodin's output of two goals and an assist. ... G Benjamin Conz (SUI) did all he could to keep his teammates alive against the USA, stopping 46 of 49 shots. ... F Roberts Bukarts (LAT) notched two goals in defeat, to the thrill of the Credit Union Centre fans. Highlight of the Night: First star D Sami Vatanen's game tying goal against the Czech Republic was simply beautiful. The first one was pretty good, too: And finally, I must give a honourable mention to commenter "jkrdevil" for pointing out my error in this afternoon's article. There have been overtimes and shootouts in the preliminary round since 2007, which make the scenario I wrote impossible. Goal differential is the tiebreaker in the event of a three-way tie, as a two-way tie is decided by the head-to-head result. I still argue that goal differential is a legitimate tiebreaker, and blowouts are a necessary evil. As for shootouts determining the best teams going forward ... I won't get into that right now.
