No. 1 Star: Mason Raymond(notes), Vancouver Canucks Raymond would deserve the No. 1 star anyway for his first career hat trick, and a natural one at that, in Vancouver's 5-1 victory over the Calgary Flames. But he gets extra credit for making Miikka Kiprusoff(notes) look this painfully bad on a shot and for transforming Brent Sutter from Smeagol into Gollum: No. 2 Star: Patrick Kane(notes), Chicago Blackhawks With less than a minute to go against the Nashville Predators, Kane called for the puck in the right circle. Duncan Keith(notes) found him, and Kane blasted a shot that was blocked ... right back to him. His second attempt beat Dan Ellis(notes) (24 saves) and the Blackhawks won a battle between the top two teams in the Central Division, 5-4. Kane had two goals and an assist on the night. Solid win for Chicago, as it remains the NHL's best home team. No. 3 Star: Ian White(notes), Toronto Maple Leafs As the highlights show, this was a nutty game between the Leafs and the Pittsburgh Penguins. The home team rallied three times against Toronto, including Mike Rupp's goal at 17:45 of the third period, his 10th of the season. But 53 seconds later, Ian White blasted a slap shot past Marc-Andre Fleury(notes) (23 saves) to give the Leafs a 4-3 win. Lee Stempniak(notes) had a goal and two assists, while Vesa Toskala(notes) made 21 saves. Honorable mention: Jeff Carter(notes) scored the eventual game-winning goal for the Philadelphia Flyers -- on an assist from Scott Harnell, OMG! -- in their 2-1 win over the New York Islanders, having not lost to the Isles since Feb. 2008. The Flyers have now won three in a row; it's the first three-game winning streak for goalie Michael Leighton(notes) (28 saves). ... Marco Sturm(notes) scored in the third period and Tim Thomas(notes) (25 saves) made a brilliant stop shorthanded in the final seconds to preserve a 2-1 Boston Bruins victory over the Florida Panthers. ... Mike Grier(notes) and Tim Connolly(notes) both scored a pair of goals as the Buffalo Sabres won at the St. Louis Blues, 5-3. Alexander Steen(notes) had two goals for the Blues and a game-high seven shots. ... Sidney Crosby(notes) scored his 23rd for the Penguins, while Jarome Iginla(notes) scored his 20th for Calgary. Did you know?: Buffalo's last win in St. Louis came on Oct. 1, 1997, a 3-1 victory. (AP) Dishonorable mention: Kiprusoff was yanked after giving up four goals on 13 shots. ... Tomas Vokoun(notes) has shut out the Bruins the last two times he's played them. So naturally Pete DeBoer gave Scott Clemmensen(notes) the start against Boston on Sunday because "you make [the decision to start Clemmensen] on a gut [feeling]." Hey, what do you know: Have gut, no glory. ... The Sabres were dominated in the face-off circle, 42-25. ... Shea Weber(notes) was a minus-3 for Nashville. ... Brian McGrattan(notes) played a whopping 1:38 and earned 4 penalty minutes for Calgary ... Finally, let's hope every NHL referee watches this tying goal by Mike Grier that trickled through Ty Conklin(notes), as 99 percent of the time this ends up an Intent To Blow travesty rather than a good goal: Posted originally: 12/28/2009 |
