Bari and Cagliari learn laser attacks aren't as much fun as they sound Print E-mail
Monday, 04 January 2010

Lasers are nothing new -- they've been used by 12-year-olds the world over to harass teachers and annoy everyone in movie theaters for years, but now it seems football fans are using them with increasing regularity in a childish attempt to influence play.

Serie A clubs Cagliari and Bari have been fined €15,000 and €10,000 respectively for fans who shined lasers at opposing players during last weekend's matches. Bari fans in particular blasted Juventus' Diego (pictured above) just before he took a penalty kick in Saturday's 3-1 loss to the home side, which he missed, though he did not blame it on the laser.

Lasers also played a part in last month's match between Barcelona and Real Madrid, where Barca fans unleashed their laser beams of fury on Iker Casillas and Cristiano Ronaldo. La Liga took no formal action, though.

While club fines are better than nothing in the fight to eradicate this annoying little detriment to the game, it probably won't do much to keep the lasers out of the stadium. With that said, I think we just have to hope that these laser shiners get a little more creative with their use because an in-game Pink Floyd laser show might actually be kind of cool.
