Devil Ball's Great 18: No. 4, TPC Sawgrass No. 17 Print E-mail
Tuesday, 04 August 2009

Over 18 days, we're bringing you the best holes in golf. Today, we focus on one of the world's most famous holes.

No. 4: TPC Sawgrass, No. 17, the Island Green

The stats: Par 3, 132 yards

The story: Is there a more photographed single hole in golf than the 17th at Sawgrass? Probably not. And while Tiger Woods has called this a gimmicky hole, it nonetheless draws the attention of both pros and amateurs year-round.

How do you play it? Well, it's pretty straightforward -- bust out the wedge and have at it. It's a target shot, pure and simple, though as you'll note from the photo above, pin position is everything -- if you hit the slope the wrong way, you're in the drink and shooting three from the tee. But if you do, you're not alone; an estimated 120,000 golf balls end up in the water around the green every year.

The hole most recently played a major role in the Players Championship in 2008, when Sergio Garcia and Paul Goydos went to a playoff for the win. Goydos put his tee shot into the water, leaving Garcia two putts to win. (He did.) Some purists protest the idea of having a championship decided by this kind of hole, but almost everyone else agrees -- man up and drop that shot on the green.
