Nalbandian expected to play in Davis Cup (AP) Print E-mail

David Nalbandian is expected to play for Argentina against Sweden in the Davis Cup this weekend after a quicker than expected recovery from a leg injury. His manager, Bernardo Ballero, told reporters Wednesday that Nalbandian had practiced earlier in the day without any problem. He was forced to withdraw last month from the Copa Telemex tournament in Buenos Aires with a right-leg injury.

Serbia set to host US in Davis Cup (AP) Print E-mail

Serbia looks to qualify for its first Davis Cup quarterfinal when it hosts a U.S. team that is missing Andy Roddick and James Blake. This will be the first time since 2000 that neither Roddick nor Blake will be on the Davis Cup roster. The Americans lead all nations with 32 Davis Cup titles, while Serbia has never progressed beyond the first round in the World Group.

Chile-Israel Davis Cup delayed by quake (AP) Print E-mail

The Davis Cup matches between Chile and Israel in Coquimbo have been delayed for a day because of the earthquake, and will start on Saturday and finish on Monday. The International Tennis Federation announced the decision on Wednesday, four days after an earthquake and tsunami killed about 800 people in Chile.

Haas could be sidelined up to 6 months (AP) Print E-mail

German tennis player Tommy Haas could be facing a long absence from the ATP Tour after undergoing surgery on his right hip. Haas, who had the surgery last Friday in Vail, Colo., said on his Web site Tuesday that he had no other alternative because "the pain was simply too great." Manager Lars Schriewer said he could not specify how long the 31-year-old might be out.

Serena Williams' injured leg kept her from a chance to avenge her U.S. Open loss to Kim Clijsters. So sister Venus took care of the job. Venus Williams defeated Kim Clijsters 6-4, 3-6, 7-5 on Monday night at Madison Square Garden to win the Billie Jean King Cup in the BNP Paribas Showdown, a match she lost a year ago to Serena.

Novak Djokovic successfully defended his Dubai Championships title on Sunday, beating Mikhail Youzhny of Russia 7-5, 5-7, 6-3 in a rain-delayed final. Leading 7-5, 2-0 before rain suspended play on Saturday, the second-seeded Serb won his 17th career title in a match lasting 3 hours, 21 minutes at the Aviation Club.
